CHAPTER 32

Breathe.

Dan silently added another command as his hand brushed against Ginevieve’s.

His sister, Liz, made a dessert for special occasions that she called Speechless. A 2,000-calorie concoction made of chocolate and butter and whipping cream so rich and gooey it lived up to its name, because it was impossible to say a word until you’d finished it.

That was Ginevieve’s laugh.

Dan actually licked his lips. To catch the water dribbling down his chin.

Fortunately, Gin didn’t notice when he grabbed a napkin from the stack and mopped it up.

“It would be easier to treat her like an adult if she didn’t wear Hello Kitty pajamas and watch cartoons on Saturday morning. Or”—Gin tossed a scowl in the direction of the bedroom even though it was wasted on Raine—“take off without letting me know where she was right away.”

“If I know my aunt and uncle, it didn’t throw them for a loop at all, having Raine show up at the door.”

“Raine said they have six children. Six.” Gin sank back against the cushion and closed her eyes. “Most of the time I don’t know what to do with the one I’ve got.”

“You’re doing great.” Dan smiled. “Raine is young, but she’s smart and capable. A lot like you were at that age, I’m guessing.”

Gin stiffened. “You’d be guessing wrong. I was a mess when I was her age.”

Dan knew he was treading on dangerous ground, but he asked anyway. “Raine’s dad?”

“He left. Too young to handle the responsibility.”

Gin was letting the guy off way too easy. “What were you? Eighteen?”

“Seventeen and a half.” Gin tipped her head back and stared at the ceiling. “Eighteen when Raine was born.”

“Evie was barely nineteen,” Dan murmured.

“Apples and oranges.”

Dan frowned. “What makes you say that?”

“Cody’s dad probably didn’t start throwing things when Evie told him she was pregnant.”

The furnace shuddered to life, and in the series of thumps coming through the thin walls of the trailer, Dan recalled the sound of feet pounding against a glossy hardwood floor.

“Meet me at the gym.”

Max had hung up the phone before Dan could say a word. When he’d arrived, Max was running ladders on the court. He looked so distraught Dan could only assume something terrible had happened. He’d practically had to wrench the basketball from Max’s hands to get him to stop.

“What’s going on?”

“Evie—” Max folded in half, hands on his knees as he gasped for air.

Dan grabbed a handful of T-shirt and jerked him upright. “What about her?”

“She thinks she’s pregnant.”

Dan had made it through the wedding. Sent Max and Evie off with a smile when they left on their honeymoon. But it took ten Mississippi’s to wrestle down the jealousy before he could smile.

“That’s great.”

“Great? We’ve only been married a few months!” Max staggered to the wall and slumped against it, leaving a trail of sweat on the concrete blocks as he slid to the floor. “I’m not ready for this, man.”

“I’m not sure anyone ever is.” Dan dropped down next to him.

“But a kid.” Max groaned. “You know what that means.
